What is the best month to go to Maui Hawaii?

So you’re trying to decide when is the best time to visit beautiful Maui? Maybe you’re trying to fit your vacation into a certain time of the year? When is the best time to travel? I’m so glad you’ve found our page because I’ll be going over our weather season by season to give you the best idea when you’re wondering, “What is the best month to go to Maui Hawaii?”

You’ll probably notice that Maui’s weather calls for rain almost every day. While this is true, it does rain on Maui every day, it doesn’t rain everywhere. For the purpose of this article relating to travel, I’ll be going over the weather that you can expect in the areas of the island that are known as the Leeward side – these are places like Kihei, Wailea, Makena, Lahaina, and Ka’anapali. These are the places where you’ll find the island’s resorts and hotels.

Winter Season on Maui

Winter Season ranges from December through February. These months tend to be a little cooler with daytime temperatures ranging from the mid 70’s to low 80’s . You may need a sweater for the evening with temps hitting the 60’s at night.

This season also brings whale season and is a magical time to witness these gentle giants in our waters.

Winter storms and extra rain can occur during these months, especially on the Northern shores. This causes high surf, some extra wind, and makes places that are off the beaten path more dangerous (ie: flash floods at waterfall locations and dangerous conditions at popular places like Nakalele Blowhole).

You’ll find the island is relatively slower during these months. The exception of Thanksgiving Week and what we call, “Festive Season” which runs between December 19 – January 2nd, are extremely busy.

Spring Months on Maui

Spring months running from March to May are absolutely gorgeous weather-wise. Light spring showers often yield what we call, “Rainbow Season”. Temperatures are mostly in the 80’s during the day with lows in the mid to high 60’s.

March tends to get much busier with Spring Break scheduled throughout the month. You’ll find visitors from the mainland at varying times through March. April and May are generally much quieter.

Summer on Maui

The Summer months of June to September are some of the busiest times to be on Maui. They are also some of the dryest making it easier to navigate to certain areas of the island that are challenging when it’s very wet. The ocean water is warmer, along with the average temperatures in the upper 80’s and higher humidity. It’s the perfect time to come if you want to spend a lot of time in the water. Keep in mind, prices of accommodations will be higher as the island is much busier than other times of the year.

Fall on Maui

Part of September through November are considered our “Fall” season, though we don’t have leaves that change color as they do on the mainland. The second half of September through the first half of November are generally much slower on the island with temperatures dropping just a bit to resemble a more Spring-like feel on the island. Warm rains keep things fresh and the temperatures are really comfortable.

When family asks me when the best time to visit on Maui is, I generally love October and the first half of November the most. It’s quiet on the island with lots of sun and enough rain to keep things looking green and beautiful.
