You’ve reserved your dream Maui photo session, you have your outfits chosen…but now, instead of enjoying your vacation, you are keeping one eye on the sky and the other on your weather app. What will you do if it rains?
Booking your Maui portrait session or dream wedding is super exciting! We are just as excited to meet you, and want the weather to be perfect for our time together. But, Maui is a tropical island, and sometimes, the weather has a plan of its own. Here’s our top tips to help you make the most of this experience:
Our biggest tip to prepare is to avoid checking weather forecasts. Because Maui is a tropical island, we are forecasted for rain every day – really. It rains on Maui every day, just not everywhere. If we are forecasted for an island-wide or state-wide storm system, I will do my best to reschedule your photo session. If that is not possible, you will be refunded.
We LOVE sessions with clouds. You probably came to the beach for the sun, but cloudy skies create the most delicious filtered light. It’s incredibly flattering to the skin, the beaches are usually less busy, and we get incredible colors and tone. Clouds add character and texture to your session, and when they’re just right, they yield the most awe-inspiring sunsets.
It’s not ideal for any of us to get wet. The beauty of Maui is that our weather is continually changing. It may be raining for 5 minutes, and then the rain quickly passes. Or it may be sunny five minutes away from our chosen location. OR (see how things can change so much?) we may be at a site and a cloud suddenly brings rain… Rain can be beautiful. Rain can add so much emotion to your session.
This honeymoon session below started out with a luminous sky on a bright afternoon, and 20 minutes after we began, in rolled a giant storm front! We went with the flow and captured a playful, romantic session dancing in the rain and laughing.
Side note…you know what rain usually brings when it comes to play? Rainbows.
You never know when they’ll show up, but we’re always thankful when they do.
Our last tip when handling fears about our Maui weather – and this is a big one – do not stress. If the weather is going to be nasty, we’ll tell you about it, and we’ll chat about rescheduling options. If the weather is iffy, we’ll go check it out, and chances are, we will create some unforgettable magic.
