It’s funny how with the internet we can all get to know each other more and more. I photographed Susan and Scott on Maui for their 10th anniversary back in 2005 (I think it was 2005… now I’m forgetting!). Since then, Susan followed my personal blog and we’ve kept in touch over the years. Then they flew to Austin last year with baby Max for a very special session in the Texas countryside.
For the past few years, I have read about their four boys, watched the family grow, watched Susan’s love of photography grow, and just created a very special friendship with this family. When Susan asked if I’d be up for a trip to Iowa with Cruz to teach her what I know about photography and do a family session, I was all for it. What a great adventure!
This was my first time being a teacher. I am a self taught photographer, so without a special degree I didn’t know if I’d be qualified to be someone’s mentor. But here’s the thing – I love my craft. I’ve personalized my style. I love what I do. And Susan is so enthusiastic and passionate about photography, I knew that we’d be the perfect fit for me to teach her. In the two and a half days I was in Iowa, Susan picked up and absorbed so much information. I’m sure I overwhelmed her, but she is doing phenomenally. I know that when she launches herself professionally, she’ll do fantastic!
We were up late at night and the boys played so well together all day.
We also made time for their family photo shoot. It was a beautiful, crisp, cool Iowa evening. Absolutely spectacular, perfect conditions for a lovely family. This session was so much fun, loving, and beautiful.
